During
the firsts years of XX century, The Metropolitan Park had many
changes. Those changes transformed this place in a necesary walk
for chileans and turists.
One
of the most important changes was the forest development and the
construction of the Funicular. This work of engineering and transportation
was opened on april 25 th, 1925. Its exceptional mechanical design,
explains why it kept up to date in such good conditions. It's
an entertaining, cheap and fast way to enter the zoo and the Virgin
Sanctuary.

Funicular
has two wagons. Each one of them has capacity to transport 50
persons and its route is an obligatory tour for city visitors.
One of the most remembered visitors is Juan Pablo II ( April 1st,
1987). For that and much more, this elevator was named National
Monument in november 2000. Every year 300.000 persons visit this
fantastic and particular elevetor.

The
Funicular crosses 485 meters on an inclinade plane of 45º/48º
degrees. It stops in three stations. It firsts is in the Pio Nono`s
Castle, and it is in the middle of Bellavista`s area. The next
station is the national Zoo. Funicular ends in Bellavista Terrace,
at 260 meters over the level of the city and 820 meters over the
sea. Very near of this terrace is the famous "Santuario de
la Inmaculada Concepción". In this area Teleferico
and Funicular get conected, configuring on additional walk for
the visitors.
