Historic Tour

During the firsts years of XX century, The Metropolitan Park had many changes. Those changes transformed this place in a necesary walk for chileans and turists.

One of the most important changes was the forest development and the construction of the Funicular. This work of engineering and transportation was opened on april 25 th, 1925. Its exceptional mechanical design, explains why it kept up to date in such good conditions. It's an entertaining, cheap and fast way to enter the zoo and the Virgin Sanctuary.

Funicular has two wagons. Each one of them has capacity to transport 50 persons and its route is an obligatory tour for city visitors. One of the most remembered visitors is Juan Pablo II ( April 1st, 1987). For that and much more, this elevator was named National Monument in november 2000. Every year 300.000 persons visit this fantastic and particular elevetor.

The Funicular crosses 485 meters on an inclinade plane of 45º/48º degrees. It stops in three stations. It firsts is in the Pio Nono`s Castle, and it is in the middle of Bellavista`s area. The next station is the national Zoo. Funicular ends in Bellavista Terrace, at 260 meters over the level of the city and 820 meters over the sea. Very near of this terrace is the famous "Santuario de la Inmaculada Concepción". In this area Teleferico and Funicular get conected, configuring on additional walk for the visitors.
